Knowing someone’s Meta Programs can help you closely
predict his actions, and we offer these categories with the caveat
that there is no one “right” way to be or to filter information. The
use of one pattern is not right and another wrong. Some patterns
are more useful in a certain context than others. The model
therefore has usefulness. The Meta Programs are not presented
here for the purpose of allowing you, the reader, to be able to put
people in little boxes. We resist that. Use them to make people’s
lives, including your own, better.
It’s also important to make a critical distinction about behav-
ior: People are NOT their behaviors. People HAVE behaviors,
and we believe that they always do the best they can with the
resources they have available. People have inside them all the
resources they need to make changes that they want to make. All
they need is new information or different strategies to assist them
in making the change. Just because you “screw up” doesn’t mean
you ARE a “screw up.” We can change that. Using this model, we
can assist someone in changing and improving his Meta
Remember also that the highest quality information is behav-
ioral. That means that as you ask the questions to determine a
person’s Meta Programs, also observe your client’s behavior.
Note if it contradicts his spoken answer. If there is a contradic-
tion, rely on the non-verbal behavior. After you have a premise
about someone, keep on re-evaluating. Even though you know
their Meta Programs, you can still keep looking.
